What is a bankroll in gambling, and how does it differ from a limit?

A bankroll is the total amount of money a person has set aside for gambling, kept apart from money for bills. A limit is a cap on how much of it can be deposited, lost or spent in a set period. The bankroll is the pool; the limit is the rule on drawing from it.

Definition

A bankroll is the whole sum of money a person has decided, in advance, they can afford to lose on gambling. It is not savings, borrowed money or money earmarked for bills. Once it is spent, it is gone, and nothing in a casino game replenishes it.

Bankroll and limit are different things

The bankroll answers "how much in total". A limit answers "how much per day, per session or per bet". A limit divides the bankroll into smaller, bounded pieces, so one bad session cannot use up everything.

Illustrative example

A person sets aside KES 5,000 for the month. That is the bankroll. They then set a weekly deposit limit of KES 1,000. The limit does not change the KES 5,000, it only caps how fast money can move from it into an account.

What a bankroll cannot do

A bankroll has no effect on the expected value of a bet. Each stake carries the same negative average result, so the amount set aside is simply the most that can be lost, not a way to recover it. See the gambler's fallacy and session limits for why chasing losses raises the cost.

What Kenyan rules say

Regulation 87 requires licensed operators to give players tools to control their gambling. These include deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, and loss, session and expenditure limits. Gambling is addictive: play responsibly, and see responsible gambling for help.

Questions and answers

Does a bigger bankroll improve the odds of winning?

No. The house edge applies to every stake whatever the size of the bankroll. A larger bankroll only lets a person place more or larger bets before the money runs out, and the expected loss grows with the amount staked.

Is a bankroll the same as the balance in a gaming account?

No. The account balance is only the part currently deposited with an operator. A bankroll is the whole sum set aside, including money not yet deposited.

Do licensed platforms in Kenya have to offer limits?

Yes. Regulation 87 of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires licensees to provide tools including deposit limits on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, and loss, session and expenditure limits.
