What is a shoe in baccarat and blackjack?

A shoe is the box, usually open on one side, that holds several decks shuffled together and lets the dealer draw cards one at a time. Baccarat and blackjack are both dealt from it. It lets many rounds run before the cards need reshuffling.

Definition

A shoe is a dealing device that holds several standard decks of 52 cards, shuffled together. The dealer slides one card at a time from the shoe, so the round proceeds without handling a loose pile. Baccarat and blackjack both use shoes, and the number of decks in them is set by the table rules.

The shoe is not usually dealt to the end. A cut card is placed in the stack, and when it comes out the shoe is reshuffled. The exact point differs between tables, and this guide does not assume one.

A worked case

Illustrative example

Suppose a shoe is built from 6 decks. It then holds 6 × 52 = 312 cards. If the dealer has used 78 cards, then 312 − 78 = 234 remain, and 78 ÷ 312 = 25% of the shoe has been dealt.

The mix of the remaining cards is now slightly different from the start. The order is still unknown, and a stake of KES 200 on the next round faces the same published rules as before.

Why it matters for odds

With more decks in the shoe, removing one card changes the odds of the next card by less. This is the reason deck count affects the margin, as set out in the guide to deck count and the blackjack house edge. For baccarat, the margins on each bet are covered in the baccarat house edge.

A shoe does not make results "due" after a run. Live tables and software games differ in how cards are shuffled and checked, which the guide to live dealer shuffles and verification explains.

The rules shown for the table are the reference. Regulation 20(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires a licensee to display clearly the rules of games, odds, house edge and average return to the player. Gambling is addictive: play responsibly, 18+ only.

Questions and answers

How many decks are in a shoe?

It depends on the table and the game rules, so no single count applies everywhere. The rules shown for the table are the reference for that game.

Does the shoe make the next card predictable?

No. What has been dealt changes the mix of cards left, but the order of the remaining cards is not known. Past cards do not make a result due.

Do Kenyan rules say anything about shoes?

The Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 do not name shoes in the text read for this guide. Regulation 20(2) requires a licensee to display clearly the rules of games, odds, house edge and average return to the player.
