What is the near-miss effect in casino games?
A near miss is a losing result that looks close to a win, such as two jackpot symbols and a third just off the line. The near-miss effect is the pull to continue that this sight creates. The result is still a plain loss, and it does not make the next round any more likely to pay.
Definition
A near miss is an outcome that is a loss but is displayed as almost a win: two matching symbols with the third stopping one position away, or a crash multiplier that ends just under the level a player had in mind. The near-miss effect is the urge to keep going that such a sight can produce, as if the game were closing in on a payout.
The arithmetic does not support that feeling. A random number generator, explained in the guide to RNG, draws each round afresh and holds no memory of how close the last one looked.
A worked case
Take a simplified three-reel game where each reel has 20 equally likely stops and one of them is the jackpot symbol. A jackpot line needs all three: 1/20 × 1/20 × 1/20 = 1/8,000.
The first two reels show the jackpot symbol with probability 1/20 × 1/20 = 1/400. The third reel then stops on a neighbour of that symbol, one position above or below, with probability 2/20 = 1/10. Such a "so close" picture therefore appears about once in 400 × 10 = 4,000 rounds, twice as often as the jackpot itself.
On the next round the jackpot chance is 1/8,000 again. A near miss is simply a different losing picture, and the expected cost per round stays the stake times the house edge, as laid out in RTP and house edge.
Why it matters for limits
Because a near miss feels like progress, it can stretch a session past the point set beforehand. This sits close to the beliefs covered in the gambler's fallacy and the sunk cost fallacy.
Regulation 87(2) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 requires licensees to provide deposit limits, loss, session and expenditure limits, and reality checks that show duration of play. Gambling is addictive: play responsibly, and see the responsible gambling page for support and self-exclusion. This guide is for adults aged 18+.
Questions and answers
Does a near miss mean a win is coming soon?
No. Each round of a certified random game is independent of the one before. The next round has the same chances whether the last one stopped one symbol short or showed nothing close.
Is a near miss a feature added to make players stay?
A near miss is a normal outcome of how symbols are arranged on a reel, and it appears in games with no special design for it. What matters for a player is that it carries no information about future rounds.
Which tools in Kenya help a player who notices the urge to continue?
Regulation 87(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 lists deposit limits, loss, session and expenditure limits, reality checks showing duration of play, and a self-exclusion option of at least twenty-four hours.
