What is hit frequency in casino games?

Hit frequency is the share of rounds that return a payout, found by dividing winning rounds by total rounds. It says how often a game pays, not how much. Two bets can share the same return to player and have very different hit frequencies.

Definition

Hit frequency is the proportion of rounds in which a game pays out anything at all. The formula is simple.

Hit frequency = winning rounds ÷ total rounds

A game that pays in 1 round out of 4 has a hit frequency of 25%. It is a property of a particular bet or game design, and over a short run the observed figure can sit well away from the stated one.

A worked case

Illustrative example

A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets. A single-number bet of KES 100 pays 35 to 1, so a hit returns KES 3,600 (KES 3,500 winnings plus the stake). One pocket in 37 wins, so the hit frequency is 1/37, about 2.70%.

Return to player: 1/37 × 3,600 = KES 97.30 per KES 100 staked, or 97.30%. A bet on red wins on 18 pockets of 37 and pays 1 to 1: 18/37 × 200 = KES 97.30, the same 97.30%, but the hit frequency is 18/37, about 48.65%.

Chance of no hit in 37 spins on the single number: (36/37)37, about 36%.

The return is identical and the experience is not. Hit frequency tells you how often money comes back; it does not tell you how much comes back on average.

Return to player, covered in the guide to how RTP and house edge work, is the average share of stakes paid back. Volatility describes how widely results swing around that average. Hit frequency is one input to both: a low hit frequency with large payouts usually means high volatility.

The negative expected value of a casino bet is unaffected by how often it hits. Regulation 20(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires a licensee to display house edge and average return to the player, not hit frequency.

A hit after a long dry run does not mean a hit is "due". Each round is independent, as the guide to the gambler's fallacy and session limits explains.

Questions and answers

Is a high hit frequency good for the player?

Not by itself. Hit frequency says nothing about the size of each payout. A game that pays often can still return less per shilling staked than one that pays rarely. The average cost is set by the house edge.

Is hit frequency the same as the chance of winning money overall?

No. A round can count as a hit when it pays back less than the stake, so a hit does not always mean a profit. Hit frequency is about how often a round pays something, not how often a session ends ahead.

Do Kenyan rules require hit frequency to be displayed?

Regulation 20(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 lists rules of games, odds, house edge and average return to the player as items a licensee must display. Hit frequency is not named in that list.
