What provably fair means in crash games, and what it does not

Provably fair is a verification method: the game commits to a round's hidden result with a cryptographic fingerprint before bets are taken, then reveals the data afterwards so anyone can check it matches. It proves the result was not changed during the round. It says nothing about the house edge or the return to player.

Definition

"Provably fair" describes a game that lets the player verify, after a round, that its result was fixed before bets were taken. The game publishes a hash, a fixed-length digital fingerprint, of secret data that determines the outcome. Once the round ends, the secret data is revealed and the player can compute the hash again to see whether it matches.

A hash cannot be worked backwards to the data, and changing even one character of the data changes the fingerprint. So a matching hash is good evidence that the operator did not swap the result after seeing the stakes. Many designs also mix in a value supplied by the player, so the operator cannot choose the data alone.

What it proves

It proves one narrow thing: consistency between the committed data and the revealed result. In a crash game, that means the stop point shown was the one fixed before the round began.

What it does not prove

It does not show the game is cheap. The cost of a crash game sits in how its stop points are distributed, which is the house edge and return to player. A verifiable game and an expensive game are entirely compatible, because the check confirms the result came from the rules, not that the rules are generous.

It also does not show that the data was drawn by a sound random number generator, and it does not make the next round predictable or any staking pattern profitable. Most players cannot run the check by hand, and a check that is never run protects no one.

How Kenyan rules relate

Regulation 45 of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires the random number generator used for all games of chance to be certified by the Authority or its approved agent, and requires the theoretical return to player to be publicly disclosed for each game. Those two items cover randomness and price. See how RNG testing works in Kenya.

Gambling is addictive: play responsibly, and only if you are 18 or older.

Questions and answers

Does provably fair mean a crash game is cheaper to play?

No. The cost of a crash game is the house margin built into how crash points are distributed. A provably fair game can carry the same margin as any other, and the check cannot reveal it.

Does provably fair replace RNG certification in Kenya?

Nothing in the regulations read for this guide treats it as a substitute. Regulation 45(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires the random number generator used for all games of chance to be certified by the Authority or its approved agent.
